4931BR Special Support English Teacher - IGCSE Aga Khan Education Services The position Aga Khan Education Services, (AKES, U) is a private, not-for-profit organization committed to enriching the lives of “many generations of multi-racial and multi-cultural student populations” through the provision of quality and affordable education. AKES, U operates schools from Pre-School to High School and offers the Cambridge Curriculum, International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and the Uganda National Primary and Secondary Curriculum. The EAL Teacher will be responsible for supporting a class of secondary-aged multilingual learners in developing the English language proficiency required to access the International High School curriculum and progress towards IGCSE qualifications. The role will involve delivering intensive English language instruction, developing students’ academic literacy and communication skills, and providing targeted support to enable students to transition successfully into mainstream subject learning. The successful candidate will have expertise in English as an Additional Language (EAL) provision and the potential and interest to develop further as an IGCSE English teacher through professional development and collaboration with the secondary academic team. She/He will take on the following major Responsibilities Review diagnostic assessments, student work, and teacher feedback to identify students’ English language proficiency levels and learning needs. Develop tailored schemes of work, lesson plans, and learning materials to support intensive English language development across listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Deliver targeted EAL instruction to develop students’ academic English and prepare them to access IGCSE-level learning across subjects. Support students in developing vocabulary, comprehension, writing skills, and communication strategies required for success in an international curriculum. Monitor student progress through ongoing assessment and provide regular reports on language development and readiness for mainstream academic study. Collaborate with subject teachers and the secondary leadership team to support students’ transition into IGCSE courses. Participate in professional development opportunities to develop expertise in IGCSE English Language teaching and curriculum delivery. The requirements Qualification, Experience and Skills Bachelors in Education with a specialization in English or a B.A. in any field with a recognised TEFL or TESOL qualification. At least 2 years of experience teaching English to non-native speakers of English. Significant experience as an ESL/EAL is an advantage, particularly experience teaching beginners. Empathetic, compassionate teacher who is patient with English Language Learners and is able to guide children in their learning. Willingness to take direction and learn new ways of teaching learners. Strong interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills. Experience working with refugees will be an advantage.
