Working in Nigeria

Nigeria has the largest formal labour pool in Africa — and the most intense competition for graduate roles. With ~1.8 million graduates entering the labour market each year and formal-sector hiring concentrated in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, the gap between credentials and shortlist outcome is decided by positioning more than by qualifications.

My Job Concierge tracks live roles across banking, telecoms, oil-and-gas, FinTech, FMCG, NGOs, technology, manufacturing, and the most active startup ecosystem on the continent. Lagos remains the centre of gravity, but Abuja is increasingly competitive for public-sector-adjacent roles.

Nigeria is Africa's largest economy and most populous country, with about 227 million people and real GDP growth projected near 4.1% in 2026 (IMF World Economic Outlook, April 2026) as reforms steady the macro picture. Services now drive most output; a fast-expanding digital economy has overtaken oil's share of GDP, even though crude still supplies roughly 29% of government revenue.

Lagos is the commercial centre and one of the continent's busiest job markets. Hiring concentrates in financial services and fintech, technology, telecommunications, the creative economy, oil and gas, and trade, alongside a vast informal sector. Abuja anchors public-sector and policy roles. Scale is the defining feature — opportunity and competition are both enormous.

For job-seekers, employers move fast and reward specificity. Demand is strongest in software and data, finance, telecoms, marketing and the creative industries, and energy. A tightly targeted CV, a credible online presence, and referrals carry real weight; generic applications are filtered out quickly in a market this deep.

Three 2026 trends define Nigerian hiring: (1) FinTech engineering hiring is global by default — Nigerian engineers compete for and win remote roles with US and UK employers, which drives local salaries up. (2) The 'japa' wave (skilled emigration) has created chronic mid-level shortages in banking, tech, and healthcare, opening fast-track senior promotions for those who stay. (3) Lagos-based HQs of multinationals are running consolidated West Africa coverage roles, opening cross-border regional opportunities.

Accountant (ICAN) (mid) NGN 400K-900K / month

CV norms

One to two pages, PDF, no photo. Lead with a strong professional summary and quantified achievements. NYSC completion is a near-universal filter for junior corporate roles — list the year and unit. Include LinkedIn URL.

Interview & work culture

Interview formats are structured at large employers (banks, telcos, consulting) and conversational at smaller ones. Expect aptitude tests + competency interviews + a final panel for graduate trainee programmes. Professional networks (alumni, NYSC batch, professional associations) are more decisive in Nigeria than in most African markets — referrals carry real weight even at multinationals.
